Event Details
Learn basic welding techniques, and turn junk into art! Participants will take part in building a large outdoor sculpture work to be showcased on the Patterson School Foundation grounds. The team of participants will design and help construct the sculpture out of reclaimed steel. The resulting sculpture will be welded and fastened together, as students receive hands-on demonstration and the chance to practice basic welds. General sculpture design principles will also be discussed in addition to technique and process. Participants are invited to bring their own scrap steel to practice on and add to the sculpture.
Joseph Bigley has been a practicing sculptor for 14 years. He holds a masters degree in sculpture from Alfred University, Alfred, NY. His practice is very expansive and very often involved metal working. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art, Sculpture at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.
Joseph is a mixed media artist with exhibits across the US and internationally. He attended and taught at Appalachian State University, and considers the area home.
His approach to creative expression relies on art’s ability to challenge how people view the world, and their own interaction with it, using his work to make powerful social commentary and address various facets of the human condition. We apply these principles to the Incubator Farm program at Patterson, and seek to make deep structural change through a community center based around regenerative farming and traditional arts.
More of his work can be found at http://www.joebigley.com/
