Event Details

One of our most popular workshops from last year returns!  Come out and enjoy a day of fine goat cheese making. Participants will make and try three types of cheeses from goat’s milk- chevre, brie, and mozzarella! Participants will see the whole process, sample the products, and leave with the recipes to recreate these simple cheeses in their own kitchen, and the knowledge of how to do more complicated cheeses as well. Children 12 and up are invited to attend with parental supervision.

Dawn Mathews began her homesteading adventure in 2009 with one dairy goat and the best intentions of fine cheeses dancing in her head. Things almost ended prematurely when her goat ate a very toxic plant. Fortunately an antitoxin shot saved the goats life, but it also rendered the milk undrinkable for 14 days. So what do you do with that? You learn to make goat milk soap! Later on, after her goat milk soap and bath product business took off, she fulfilled her dream of yummy cheeses along with delicious goat milk fudge, caramel, and other dairy delights. Their family sold their half acre micro farm and bought a piece of land in Lenoir they have been developing into their dream farm since 2014. The Thankful Goat Farm became a WWOOF-USA farm in 2012 and accepts interns from that organization to help them live out their dream and teach others to farm, check out The Thankful Goat for more info!
