WNC Sculpture Park Tour
PSF Resident, Artist, and Educator Joe Bigley will give a tour of some of the amazing artwork popping up on PSF grounds, and tell us all about the development of the WNC Sculpture Center and Park in and around the old Stoney Gym. The Western North Carolina Sculpture Center is dedicated to connecting people with the arts through exhibitions, interactions with artists, and the opportunity to experience creative processes in an inclusive environment. Currently, they are raising the funds to re-roof the old Gym. If you would like to support their efforts, you may make a donation through our sculpture center page. Friday, 5:00 pm, Palmyra Hall.
Writing Workshop with Kitty Rosati, NY Times Bestselling Author & Board Member
Kitty Rosati, the great, great niece of Samuel Legerwood Patterson, has served as Patterson School Foundation’s (PSF) heir board member for nine years, after decades of directing nutrition programs at Duke University and writing four books on healing. Kitty looks forward to facilitating writing sessions for the August 2-3, 2019 Patterson School reunion attendees. No writing experience will be needed, simply a willingness to explore a group writing venture. Some participants will want to consider documenting memories from their days at Patterson School, and contribute their story to the book that alumnus William Compton has offered to compile for our Archives. William Ritter, PSF’s Farming and Cultural Resource Manager, will be offering the opportunity for participants to be videoed or audio recorded, if they’d like, as well. Everyone coming has interesting and unique Patterson stories, and many have treasured photos to share. Many thanks for being part of this exciting creative endeavor! If we don’t document our rich Patterson School history it will be forever lost and unknown to future generations, so we thank you and your children and grandchildren will thank you! Yoga with Katie Rose Gurkin
Katie Rose Gurkin is Kitty Rosati’s niece, thus Samuel Legerwood Patterson’s great, great, great niece. She is a recent University of Colorado at Boulder business graduate, and a talented photographer and certified Yoga Alliance instructor. Although Katie Rose was raised in Austin, TX, she has a growing appreciation and love for Patterson School, and looks forward to guiding you through some meditation, Centering Prayer and yoga practices. Katie Rose’s sessions will create fluidity and connection via mindful movement and meditation, and are accessible to all experience levels. Her passion for healing will be apparent as she leads us to utilize breath to collectively draw presence into the unity of body, emotions, spirit and community. No experience required, simply wear comfortable, stretchy clothes, and bring a mat or blanket if you’d like. Saturday, 9:00 am to 10:00 am, Great Lawn
Self-Guided Oral History Booth
Please visit our self-guided “oral history booth” to share and record stories and reminiscences about your time or relationship with the Patterson School. At 11:00 William Compton ’73 and Farm & Cultural Resources Manager William Ritter will talk about PSF’s Oral Histories Preservation. Memorial for Shirrelene Seaver
A memorial will be held for beloved long-time nurse Shirrelen Seaver at the Sarah Joyce Lenor Memorial Chapel. Her husband, Blanchard (Bill) was a Patterson graduate from the 1940s, and later served as the Comptroller. Shirley & Bill had three boys who all attended and graduated from The Patterson School. All of the boys later served the School in various capacities as well. So, the Seaver family has been part of Patterson since the 1940s! The eldest, Danny, currently serves as a PSF board member. The Seavers have requested that memorial contributions be made to Patterson School Foundation in lieu of flowers. Saturday, 2:00 pm SJLM Chapel
