Permaculture Introduction and Basic Design intensive

Day 1, Saturday, July 20, 2013
Part I: Intro to Permaculture and Permaculture Practices
9:00 – 3:00 p.m. In-depth introduction to the principles and ethics of Permaculture.
Learn why this systems design approach is being employed everywhere from small urban plots to large plantations by Nestle.
Gain exposure to some of the key concepts of permaculture.
Put some of these key concepts directly into action.
Gain exposure to an outline of the purpose of permaculture design.
Bring a bag lunch for a brief lunch break at noon. 12:00 – 12:30
12:30 – 3:00 Permaculture in Action: Observation and Assessment: Patterson School
3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Early Supper Break
5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Watch and discuss two key permaculture inspired films: Dirt, the Movie
and most likely parts of the Future of Food http://www.permaculturecairns.com/

Day 2, Sunday, July 21, Part I Continued
9:00 – 12:00 Permaculture in Practice
Overview of some standard low cost, low entry point permaculture practices:
Hugelkultur (address issues of catch and store, soil health, longevity, high management versus high labor)
Vermiculture (building fertility, low cost, low energy soil tillage)
Compost (capture and store energy, take out of the waste stream, rethink “pollution)
with a view to analogies of issues at Patterson.
12:00 – 2:00 Lunch Break
People who attend Part I need not also attend Part II. Those people not staying for the remaining day and 1/2 may now depart.
PART II: Permaculture Practicum, designing the Patterson School.
Gain a very basic understanding of how to create a permaculture design by creating a design for the Patterson School. These tools and this knowledge can be deepened in a longer permaculture course….
3:00 – 5:00 p.m, Design prep and information gathering
Working with Crystal, Edward, and two of their graduates (Eric Jackson and Brian Koser) the remaining participants will be broken in two teams to produce a draft permaculture design for the Patterson School, its purpose, and its properties. This design will be based in the ethics, principles, and practices of permaculture. The four trained designers will facilitate the remaining participants in this process.
Evening: Patterns and Design in Nature, depending on the availability of instructor Cindy Pickering–if she cannot do Saturday evening or day
Or teams are welcome to continue work independently….
Day 3, Monday, July 22, 2013, Part II continued.
9:00 – 12:00 Draft design creation by teams (these will be very rough drafts)
12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Lunch
1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Finishing the draft design and presentation
3:00 – 4:00 Presenting the Draft Design Overview and Devising Next Steps. People who can return to attend this are welcome to attend.

Patterson School Foundation is thrilled to offer a Permaculture Introduction and Basic Design intensive from July 20th-22nd. This has allowed the directors of We Are All Farmers Permaculture Institute, Edward Marshall and Crystal Cook, to reduce the price to only $70, regardless of your length of stay! They will condense the essence of the Permaculture training to benefit those of us who want to know the basics, but don’t have the time or money for the full certification course at this time. While enjoying the Patterson School Foundation’s 1400 acre property that Samuel Legerwood Patterson, NC’s first elected NC Agricultural Commissioner, left for agricultural education, we will learn how to better utilize this land as well as how to maximize and regenerate our own land’s potential. Nestled in Happy Valley, this idyllic spot between Lenoir and Blowing Rock, NC will surround you with century old school buildings and boxwoods, and renew your interest in a natural approach to life! Hopefully this inexpensive and flexible educational opportunity will inspire you to at least come for Part I, and hopefully Part I and II, to educate yourselves on optimal stewardship of your land.
